Installation Error Message "The OLE file COMPOBJ is locked and cannot be updated.."

The information in this article applies to:

  • MARS 16bit rating applications for Windows
  • Customized 16bit rating applications built by Middlewest

Symptoms

When you attempt to install a rating system you recieve a message:
"The OLE file COMPOBJ is locked and cannot be updated.  Please shut down all other running applications and restart the installation."

Cause

This error can occur when applications are running in background, or when portions of applications are still in memory even though the applications have been closed.

Resolution

First, make sure you save your work and exit all applications.  Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and bring up the Close Program window.  Force close all applications you see listed by highlighting the application and then click "End Task." You must press Ctrl+Alt+Delete again for each application. Do not close Explorer.  You may also leave sage and systray open.  Be sure to force close the Microsoft Office toolbar shortcut, utilities and communication software.

After all applications have been closed, try to install the software again.  Applications you forced closed should load again after rebooting the computer.

Occasionally you might receive the same error message after performing the above solution.  This is usually caused by Windows not properly clearing memory when applications are closed.  If this occurs, restart the computer and press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and force close applications as described above.
